From Earth to Vessel
This interesting display of Judaica showcases a variety of Bonnie Cohen's ceramic pieces. Focusing on themes of nature and stories from the Bible, Bonnie uses ancient pottery decoration techniques in her creations. The methods are similar to printmaking. The recurring motifs of sun, moon, peacocks, elks and stars beautifully blend ancient and modern imagery and are incorporated with hand lettered familiar prayers and quotations from the Bible. The effect is unique and eye-catching. When questioned about what inspires her as an artist, Bonnie reflects that during Sabbath services she may hear "a beautiful line of Torah. Later in my studio, I struggle to give the words meaning in clay." This deep felt passion is quickly apparent in her work.
This outstanding exhibit demonstrated a joyous and uplifting Jewish perspective.
