Jews in the World of Sports

In celebration of the All Star Game (2005), and Super Bowl hosted by the city of Detroit, as well as the 2006 winter Olympic Games, we presented a special exhibit on Jewish sports heroes.  There were a few with local ties to Detroit and even Temple Israel!

The exhibit featured memorabilia from Jewish sports legends such as baseball stars Sandy Koufax and Hank Greenberg, as well as lightweight boxing champion, Benny Leonard. It also spotlighted local sports heroes with ties to Detroit such as former Detroit Tiger Gabe Kaplar and the Red Wings top scoring defenseman in the NHL, Mathieu Schneider.  The museum also honored those sports heroes with ties to Temple Israel, such as competitive speed skater and Olympic coach, Ben Bagdade, as well as baseball stars August “Happy” Foreman and his grandson, Richard “Hap” Foreman.
