Traditions in Silk
In 1992, after working for several years as an occupational therapist in community mental health and then being part of the initial team responsible for the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt, Nancy Katz decided that it was time to take the plunge and make art for a living. After years of dabbling, she felt she could no longer hold herself back and that it was time to put herself (and her work) out into the world. The Jewish community seemed like a natural arena. Since 1982 she had been teaching art in Jewish camp settings. Three of the tallitot exhibited are a result of such camps. She witnessed a renaissance of Jewish spirituality and the impact contemporary ritual objects play in the enhancement and celebration of modern Jewish life. Nancy says, It is an honor to be part of a network of artisans committed to the beautification of Jewish life.
