Focusing the Spirit

Kavanat Haruach is Temple Israel’s first CD of worship music for Friday nights. Tracks from Kavanat Haruach have been featured on the Union for Reform Judaism’s Ruach CD, as well as on the Songbook and CD for Kabbalat Shabbat at the URJ’s Biennial Convention.

Generously underwritten by Shari and Stanley Finsilver, Nancy Katzman and Family, and Hilary and Edan King

This CD is an expression of our continuing journey into Jewish worship with our wonderful community. We have tried to reflect the different styles, moods, and sounds that are in our services. Sometimes we have simply piano and voice. Sometimes we add guitars and harmony or a full band. There are inspiring new works from artists across North America, as well as some exciting new musical treatments of beloved older melodies. There are also some of the most popular American settings of prayers sung with all the joy we feel for our tradition, our liturgy, and our God.

May this music bring prayer, peace, and joy into your homes, cars, ipods, or wherever you take the time to listen.
May God bring you many blessings.
May your spirit find its true intention.
-Michael and Neil

More Praise for Kavanat Haruach

The melodies by Shawn McDonald are truly inspirational and the arrangement of Ein Keloheinu is nothing short of brilliant.
-Cantor Lisa Levine

Kavanat haruach captures a stunning meeting of the ancient and the modern. The eclectic combination of Jewish liturgical music arranged through the lens of world music takes us on a musical journey filled with prayerful moments of joy, excitement and profound beauty. Michael Smolash and Neil Michaels sing in an engaging and lyrically glorious style befitting of sweet singers of Israel. This CD is a triumph for the modern Cantorate!
– Cantor Mo Glazman, White Plains, NY

This CD inspires me. From the incredible and engaging voices of Cantor Michael Smolash and Cantorial Soloist Neil Michaels, to the stellar production value and amazing musicians. There is a wonderfully fresh approach to the familiar here and at the same time, a deep respect for tradition. The blend of the two is part of what makes this CD so very special. I feel genuinely uplifted each and every time I listen. Congratulations!
