Hebrew Reading

The Hebrew language is an important element of our Jewish identity. The use and knowledge of Hebrew is woven throughout our rituals, observances, history, and lifecycles. Familiarity and enjoyment of Hebrew begins in Tyner Religious School Kindergarten. Kindergarten through third grade are introduced to Hebrew through a multi-sensory approach including songs, puppets, and a variety of visual aids. Our goal is to introduce the student to the sound of Hebrew and terms associated with home holidays and rituals. Midweek Hebrew language instruction begins in the fourth grade. Our primary goal is to provide students with the skills and tools for reading and understanding Hebrew. To meet the various needs of our students, we use multi-sensory auditory, visual, verbal, and tactile techniques. Individual and group activities are carefully balanced. Learning is enhanced and enriched by experiential games, music, and the use of state-of the-art software through both classroom computers and visits to the Hodari Family Children’s Library and Media Center: Completion of the Hebrew alphabet is celebrated with a "Siyum Ha-Sefer" ceremony for our Aleph (fourth grade) students. Throughout the four years that students participate in midweek Hebrew classes, they learn to read the Shabbat and holiday liturgies with confidence. They learn to comprehend the basic structure of the worship services and the variety of ways in which Reform Judaism interprets the liturgy.
